I had been so frustrated with the Rams during the last few seasons, that I really needed to take break from it. So this is my first post in quite some time. Today, and the past several months, the Rams have made moves that made me feel like I needed to post.
Firstly, today the Rams released veteran Torry Holt. Was this a surprise to me? No. Torry wanted out of St. Louis, for obvious reasons. The Rams granted his wish. I just wanted to say Thanks Torry! It was sure fun watching you especially earlier in your career during the greatest show on turf days. This team will not be the same without you. I hope you land on a team where passing is a priority. The Saints would be good for you; Carolina might even work too. Wherever you go I wish you the best.
At the end of the 2008 regular season, I posted that a lot of changes would be coming to the Rams. I wasn't wrong. I also said the changes needed to start up top and I was hoping Chip Rosenbloom had the ability to push personal feelings aside and make the right decisions for the team. He did. With Billy Devaney running the show now in St. Louis, the Rams have "plowed" ahead. Steve Spagnuolo was hired as head coach. He brought with him nearly a completely new staff. They have made tough decisions in an attempt to turn this franchise around.
My son loves baseball. He pitches for a local comp baseball team. When things get tough for him when he's on the mound, I remind him to go back to the basics. Be sure you have good balance, that you push off hard with your back foot, and that your arm goes all the way out and 'over the top'. This simple reminder does wonders for him. Sometimes you can get carried away in trying new things you forget the basics.
I believe this was the Rams' problems. In the past few weeks I've been watching closely as I see new head coach Steve Spagnuolo brings this organization back to the basics. Releasing Torry Holt and Orlando Pace is part of that goal. I'll be it was tough to let them go. Then I watched as they brought in a tough hard nosed Fullback in Mike Karney who was recently release from the Saints. This tells me the Rams are heading back to the basics. Running the football. This team I swore had forgotten how to run the ball at times. It has been shown through times that teams that run the football effectively win championships. The Rams are an excellent example of that. When they won the Superbowl in 2000, they ran the football equally as well as they passed the football. That team was both #1 in rushing and passing. So it's back to the basics.
As much as I hate to see Torry Holt and Orlando Pace leave the team, you can see why it was necessary to let them go. The Rams are headed in the right direction...back to the basics.
Earlier I wasn't sure if the Rams would be able to win immediately this Fall. But as I look at what is going on, they could easily be the surprise team this fall. I'm not saying they'll win the Superbowl or even the NFC, but depending on what they do in the draft, they could surprise a lot of people. It'll be kinda fun to watch this play out.
